The Experience

What Is Scalloping?

Bay scalloping is a uniquely Florida experience — part snorkeling adventure, part treasure hunt, part seafood dinner. You'll wade or swim over shallow grass flats in crystal-clear Gulf water, spotting bay scallops by their distinctive rows of bright blue eyes, then scooping them into a mesh bag by hand.

No fishing rod, no hook, no complicated technique. If you can float and look down, you can scallop. That simplicity is what makes it one of the best family activities on the Gulf Coast — kids as young as five or six can participate with basic snorkel gear and a little guidance from Captain Aaron.

The reward at the end of the trip? A cooler full of fresh-caught bay scallops — one of the sweetest, most sought-after shellfish in the world. Most guests cook them the same night.

Your Trip

What to Expect

A typical 4-hour scalloping charter with Coyote Cruise

01
Meet & Launch
We meet at the dock in New Port Richey, go over the plan, fit you with snorkel gear, and cruise out to the grass flats. Travel time is usually 20–40 minutes depending on where the scallops are running best.
02
Dive & Collect
Captain Aaron anchors over productive beds in 3–6 feet of water. Everyone hops in with mask, snorkel, fins, and a mesh bag. The captain stays on board to assist, move the boat when needed, and help anyone who wants a break.
03
Clean & Go
Once you've filled your bags (or hit your limit), we head back to the dock. Captain Aaron shows you how to clean your scallops so they're ready for the kitchen. Take home the freshest seafood you've ever tasted.

Common Questions

Scalloping FAQ

When is scalloping season?
Florida's 2026 Nature Coast scalloping season runs July 1 through September 24. We run trips every day the weather allows throughout the entire season.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Basic water comfort is helpful, but you don't need to be a strong swimmer. Scalloping happens in shallow water (3–6 feet), and we provide flotation devices for anyone who wants extra confidence.
Is scalloping good for kids?
It's one of the best family water activities in Florida. Kids love snorkeling in calm, shallow grass flats and spotting the bright blue eyes of bay scallops. We carry child-sized gear and keep safety the top priority.
What's the bag limit?
2 gallons of whole scallops (or 1 pint of meat) per person per day. The vessel limit is 10 gallons whole (or ½ gallon of meat). Captain Aaron keeps everyone within legal limits.
How many people can go?
Up to 6 passengers per trip. The base price covers up to 4 guests — each additional person is $50.
What if the weather is bad?
Safety comes first. If conditions are unsafe we'll reschedule your trip at no extra charge. We monitor weather closely and will contact you in advance if a reschedule is needed.
